Individual And Family Psychotherapy With Preteens (10 And Up) And Adolescents

For Teens:

Being an adolescent can suck. You don’t know what’s going on with you half of the time. You’re dealing with so many emotions you don’t know which way is up. You love your parents, but all of sudden it seems like they really have no clue what’s going on with you. Your friends are your besties one day, but stab you in the back the next. You feel like you’re living in a soap opera half of the time. Parents don’t get how some things are super important to you, and even though you are angry with them you hate disappointing them more. Sometimes you just feel numb of even worse, empty. And sometimes, you just act without thinking, because the pain of dealing with it all is too much. I can help you sort through these confusing feelings. Because I’m not your mom, dad, or your teacher, I won’t be telling you what to do. I’ll be an empathic ear who we’ll do her best to understand what you’re going through and to help you figure out ways to deal with those confusing emotions without hurting yourself or others.

For Parents:

When working with adolescents and preteens, I often teach Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills. These coping skills can help teens tolerate strong emotions without taking them out on others, ask for what they want/need in an appropriate fashion, describe their emotions in words without acting on them, cope with difficult situations, and maintain self-respect. DBT skills help teens who engage in unhealthy behaviors because they have trouble dealing with their emotions, such as binging, purging, and cutting. Because teens/preteens are part of a family unit, family therapy is an important are in important part of the work. Family sessions with parents/guardians and are held every few weeks.
